The Woodshop at St. Paul’s: Local Wood, Global-Minded Teaching

St. Paul’s Woodworking Teacher Doug Finkel has been teaching a green curriculum in the Woodshop for several years, earning the Catherine L. McAuliffe Environmental Leadership Award in 2013 in recognition for his outstanding teaching and leadership in environmental stewardship.

Mr. Finkel uses wood from on and around campus whenever possible, teaching the boys about conservation and offering them a connection to the history of the wood they are working with.

The students also learn biology lessons through the green curriculum as it require an understanding for the material’s basic cellular structure, and the way in which it dries, shrinks, warps, and cracks.
